Gandhian Studies

The Gandhian Studies Center was established in July 2008 under the scheme of EPOCH making social thinkers of India, of the UGC. It was formally inaugurated by Mrs. Shiela Dikshit, the Chief Minister of Delhi on 18th Feb, 2009.

In the contemporary society, corruption, criminalisation, caste and community based vote bank politics and cosumerism have become rampant. In such scenario Gandhian Philosophy with its matchless weapons of truth and non-violence has become very relevant. The revival of Gandhigiri bears ample testimony to Gandhi’s continuing relevance in the 21st century. It’s in this context the UGC has set up Gandhian studies centres in colleges all over the country.

Ours is the first such centre set up in any college in Punjab. We aim to study and propagate the social, economic and political ideas of Mahatma Gandhi in today’s context through lectures, workshops, seminars and competitions.

In its short existence the centre has taken up various projects to fulfill its objectives, under its women empowerment cell and ‘Sapling of Life Club’.

  1. The women empowerment cell of the centre is running a free vocational training course for rural girls of Nurpur Village since Dec 2008. They have been trained in candle making Pot decoration, Paper Mache, Cosmetology, Dress Designing and basic computers.
  2. To spread the message of Mahatma Gandhi, the centre organised an inter college competition on 30th Jan 2009, 150 students from 22 colleges participated in paper reading, poetical recitation, salad making, Rangoli and Poster making competitions.
  3. An intra school competition "Satya Ki Aor" was organized by the centre in Sanskriti School on 28th March 2009.
  4. A National seminar on the "Challenges of the 21st century and the Gandhian Alternatives" was organised on March 23, 2009.
