No history of woman emancipation and empowerment and India’s
freedom struggle is complete without a mention of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya ,
Jalandhar. If one looks back in time one becomes aware of the immeasurably
important role this pioneering institute of women education in North India has
played in the socio historical background of India.
Established in 1886
by Lala Dev Raj Ji , a crusader for women education , the college started as
‘Bal Shakha Vidyalaya’ with just when Indian society was orthodox and
retrogressive. The institution got its present name, Kanya Maha Vidyalaya in
1896. Recognizing its syllabi and courses which were taught by the college,
Punjab University ( Lahore ) allowed its students to appear as private
candidates .Under the committed stewardships of the founding father and his
illustrious successors, Rai Bahadur Badri Dass , Smt. Savitri Devi , Smt. Shanno
Devi, the college emerged as a nerve center of resurgent nationalism inculcating
pride in being an Indian and in Indian ness.
